Nokia 2 received its last update

Around 25 months ago, the Nokia 2 was announced. The Nokia 2 was Nokia Mobile’s first ultra affordable smartphone, announced with a huge 4100mAh battery and removable back cover. The device was powered by Snapdragon 212 in combination with 1GB of RAM, but not running Android GO, which proved to be key for the future of this device.

With a low amount of RAM and using regular, more power-hungry Android, Nokia 2 always had issues when it comes to update. The biggest issue (the first and last basically) was updating the device from Android 7.1.1 to Android 8. Nokia Mobile couldn’t do that because Android 8 required more than 1GB of RAM, so a decision was made to update the device to Android 8.1, but with some performance improvements from Android Go.

That also proved to be hard to do, so at the end Nokia Mobile did offer Android 8.1 update, but to Nokia 2 customers that decide to sign up for the update, while the rest of Nokia 2 units will stay on Android 7.1.1 and continue to receive monthly security updates till November 2019.

Few days ago, the November 2019 security update started rolling out for Nokia 2 device based on Android Nougat and Android Oreo. The release of this update marks the end of Nokia 2’s software lifecycle and is also the first Nokia Mobile device to be “decommissioned”, in terms of updates.

Nokia 2 still had a good 2 years of monthly update, something that is still rare in low end Android world, even today. Hopefully, all Nokia 2 users will find a worthy replacement.
