Nokia TA-1412 and TA-1404 sport a new camera module and a 50 MP rear camera

Last month when @evleaks posted the pictures of four unannounced Nokia phones, people seemed taken aback on seeing two of those devices without the symmetrically placed circular camera housing. The rear camera module is there at the left corner, which is very common among the devices by other companies but looks a bit unusual on a Nokia smartphone.

If we go by the model numbers (N150DL, N151DL, N152DL, and N1530DL) mentioned by @evleaks, then those devices should be exclusive for the US market, and more specifically, for TracFone and its subsidiaries. However, Nokia Mobile also seems to be bringing that design change to its global phones.

The Nokia TA-1404, which appeared a few days ago on FCC, and the Nokia TA-1412, which surfaced today, can be seen sporting a new triple camera housing at the back with the camera rings protruding out of the module. The documents reveal that these two model numbers alongside TA-1401, TA-1405, and TA-1415 belong to the same global phone, while TA-1418 could be another variant.

The device comes with an 8 MP front camera, while there is a 50 MP primary camera and two other cameras of 2 MP resolution alongside the flash at the back. The overall diagonal of the device measures 174 mm, but the display measures 162 mm (~6.4-inch) with a teardrop notch. The power button also holds the fingerprint sensor.

Nokia TA-1404, the dual SIM variant, will come with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of ROM. On the other hand, Nokia TA-1412 is a single SIM variant and will also be available with 3 GB of RAM paired with 64 GB of ROM alongside the 4/128 GB configuration. The device might be based on a Unisoc processor since one of the documents of TA-1404 mentions Unisoc efuse security boot mechanism for software security.

It will be powered by the WT-341 battery with a capacity of 4900 mAh, which sounds pretty much the same as the WT-340 battery on the Nokia G10 and Nokia G20. The device was tested with three 10 W chargers and one 20 W charger. There is support for Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth, but not for NFC.

The network bands supported by Nokia TA-1404 and TA-1412 are as follows:

  • GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
  • WCDMA: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8
  • LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12/17, 13, 28, 66

At first, the device might look similar to the Nokia N1530DL leaked by @evleaks, but the placement of the audio port on both devices is different, i.e., it is to the right side of the top part for N1530DL, while it is to the opposite end at the top for TA-1404/TA-1412. Also, the text on the camera module for TA-1404/TA-1412 is not clear, but it houses a 50 MP camera, while the text on the camera housing for N1530DL reads “48 MP PUREVIEW.”

Anyways, I wonder what has made the company move away from the symmetrical design, especially when Raun Forsyth, Head of Design, HMD Global, said in an interview in 2019 that “They (engineers) haven’t found a situation where it (center placement of the camera lenses) couldn’t be done.” This takes away the uniqueness that the Nokia smartphones have in terms of design.
