Two days back, a few retailers in the UAE and UK listed an unexpected Nokia smartphone from the G series, and it was not the G30 or G40 but the Nokia G50. The listing lacked any information about the device other than one of the body colors. Now, one more retailer from the UK has added the Nokia G50 to its catalogue, and this time the listing presents us with some more characteristics of the phone.

As it turns out, the Nokia G50 is indeed a 5G smartphone, and as such, it will also become the most affordable 5G smartphone coming from the hands of Nokia Mobile. If you consider the prices of the affordable 5G phones from the other brands, then the Nokia G50 may not sound very affordable, but it is better not to make assumptions since its specifications are not known.

The retailer says that the 4/64 GB variant will cost around £207 (€239, ₹21220, US$283), while the price without VAT (Value Added Tax) will be £172 (€199, ₹17635, US$235). The Nokia G50 will be available in Blue and Sand colours.

It will be easier for Nokia Mobile to churn out a few more phones based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 5G platform since it is already being used to power the Nokia X20, Nokia X10, and unreleased Nokia XR20. However, the G series is currently consuming the MediaTek processors, so there are chances that the Nokia G50 will also feature one of the 5G chips from them.

There was a rumor in June 2020 stating that Nokia Mobile was developing an affordable 5G smartphone using a MediaTek processor. Even HMD Global’s China-based Marketing Specialist, Yucheng Zhang, did not rule out the chances of MediaTek 5G chips in future Nokia phones. Based on the listing price, my best guess would be either the MediaTek Dimensity 700 or 720.

Although we are just a week away from the next Nokia Mobile launch event, the announcement date of the Nokia G50 remains unknown. Also, it will be interesting to see if the G50 will be accompanied by a similarly named X series phone, i.e., the Nokia X50.
